Gay saunas are places where gay men meet strangers to have sex. With exclusive access to one Nottingham business, this documentary enters the
secretive world of the gay sauna for the very first time.
We meet the people who go there for sexual pleasures – from teachers to
plumbers to local councillors - and the staff who clean up after them….
There is thought to be a gay sauna in almost every city in the UK. But
what exactly happens inside?
On some levels CS2 in Nottingham much like any normal, conventional
sauna. It has a power shower, a jacuzzi and some changing rooms. But
it’s upstairs that is unique to a gay sauna. Here, over 1000sq ft of
space is put aside to cater to every sexual need from ‘dark rooms’ to
‘sex swings’. Customers come here at any time of day – during their
lunch break or after a night out to have sex with perfect strangers. And
at £12 a visit, business is booming.
Secrets of the Gay Sauna is a revealing insight into a hidden world and
also a surprising, sideways look at modern gay relationships. The
documentary takes an in-depth look at CS2 in Nottingham – which features
an array of dark rooms, sex rooms and glory holes – as well as some of
the patrons that regularly visit the sauna.
Couple John and Joe, who have been together for well over 30 years and
intend to marry in the near future, regularly attend the sauna and say
they’re happy living in an open relationship. Another of those featured
in the documentary is Robin, a recently married Tory Councillor. He says
that attitudes have changed in recent years to the point where he’s
able to use the sauna’s facilities without fear of intimidation.
