This is a comedy by Michael Cacoyannis, director of the iconic Greek film "Zorba the Greek" (1964)
1992 Athens from an aerial view: traffic, chaos , terrorism, transvestites, Maria Callas, gay sailors and mad taxi drivers ! A young man is chased in a confused state as a bank robber and he will be saved by a motorcyclist who later falls in love with the young man's mother (Irene Papas, an iconic persona of Greek Cinema e.g. "Zorba the Greek", "Captain Corelli's Mandolin", "The Guns of Navarone", "Z" etc).
This was a blockbuster in 1992 Greece, because of Mrs Papas and because of the two male leads - women and (gay) men were in love with them !! 70% of the audience were young people. The story was also provocative, as a closeted, gay son comes out. In 1992, Homosexuality had just been deleted from the list of "mental illnesses" in Greece and this was a big issue. Why ? A History Note : at the 32nd minute of the film, the young gymnast says that he dodged military service (compulsory in Greece, even today 2017) by stating to the army authorities that he's a homosexual. History is asf: Greece decriminalized Homosexuality in 1950 however at the same time Homosexuality was included in the list of "mental illnesses" that "offered" exemption from mandatory military service.Thence, thousands of young men (even heteros), used this loophole to avoid the army. This stopped in 1992, when all gay men suddenly became "sane" again... English Subtitles by Yaass!!! (Thank you !!!)
